Abstract:In this study we use carbohydrate probes to search for novel cell surface lectins in the immune system. Many carbohydrate binding proteins are members of the C-type lectin superfamily, whose ligand binding is dependent on calcium. To identify potential new members of this superfamily, fluorescein-conjugated carbohydrate polymers were used to probe for calcium-dependent cell surface binding. This approach offers advantages over the use of monoclonal antibody probes since only carbohydrate binding proteins would… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
