Calcium Complexes of Carboxylate-Containing Polyamide with Sterically Disposed NH···O Hydrogen Bond:  Detection of the Polyamide in Calcium Carbonate by 13C Cross-Polarization/Magic Angle Spinning Spectra

Abstract: Carboxylate-containing polyamides were synthesized from 2,6-di(amino)benzoic acid and dimethylmalonyl dichloride, isophthaloyl dichloride, and fumaryl dichloride. These polymers, {NHC6H3-(COO)NHCOC(CH3)2CO}n, {NHC6H3(COO)NHCO-m-C6H4CO}n, and {NHC6H3(COO)NHCO-trans-CHd CHCO}n, have seven to eight carboxylate units in a polymer chain, and their Ca(II) complexes possess NH‚‚‚O hydrogen bonds, which prevents the Ca-O dissociation by hydrolysis. CaCO3 was obtained from aqueous Ca 2+ and CO3 2-in the presence of the… Show more

“…CaCO 3 crystallization in the presence of water-insoluble polymers such as chitin, [71] collagen, [72] elastin, [73] carboxylatecontaining polyamides, [74] and alternately amidated polyacrylate [75] has been carried out in the absence of soluble additives. The process of crystallization and the interactions between polymers and crystals have been intensively examined.…”

“…When the coordinating anion form has a high pK a value, the formation and dissociation of a metal-ligand bond depend on that value. Dissociation is prevented by the NHÁ Á ÁO hydrogen bonds from coordinating carboxylate groups, because these NHÁ Á ÁO hydrogen bonds lower the pK a value for the corresponding carboxylic acid [16,30,31,35]. The hydrogen bonds involving the coordinating O atom of phenolate [36] or thiolate function similarly [37,38].…”

“…[14][15][16][17][18] Even though the amide NHs are located within hydrogen-bonding ated and deprotonated carboxyl group, respectively. Each conformation was determined by X-ray analyses and distance, these compounds do not form NH···O hydrogen bonds with the carboxyl group in the acid state; they form strong hydrogen bonds only in the carboxylate anion state.…”
