“…Based on a consensus, the effectiveness of anti-resorptive treatment by bisphosphonates in OP depends on the presence of a su cient serum level of vitamin D and enough calcium in diet (5). Supplementation with a combination of calcium and vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) has long been suggested as potentially successful in reducing the de ciency, and can serve as a fundamental therapeutic regimen in the primary and secondary prevention and treatment of OP in order to increase bone mineral density (BMD) and reduce the risk of fall and, consequently, osteoporotic fractures (5,(10)(11)(12). Some other recent clinical results did not fully support this theory and stated that higher doses of vitamin D administration with or without calcium may not be effective in increasing BMD; it had no bene t on lower extremity function, was associated with an increased risk of fall, and was not able to reduce the risk of progression in OP.…”

“…Calcium supplementation, guaranteeing a daily dose intake within a range of 700-1,500 mg, is strongly re commended by American and European taskforces in subjects affected by osteopenia, osteoporosis or at risk of calcium deficiency [13,50].…”
