Calcium balance in sea bream (Sparus aurata): the effect of oestradiol-17beta

Abstract: In all teleost fishes vitellogenesis is triggered and maintained by oestradiol-17 (E 2 ) and is accompanied by an increase of blood plasma calcium and phosphate. The action of this hormone on calcium metabolism was investigated by treating fast-growing immature juvenile sea bream (Sparus aurata) with coconut butter implants alone (control) or implants containing 10 µg/g E 2 . Treatment with E 2 induced the production of circulating vitellogenin, a 2·5-fold increase in plasma ionic Ca 2+ and a 10-fold increase … Show more

“…As described above, E2 -treatment increases whole body calcium accumulation and stimulates reabsorption of calcium from dermal scales (Guerreiro et al, 2002). As pthrp and pth lr are expressed in hepatocytes, a para-/autocrine role for PTHrP in vitellogenesis was indicated, in analogy to the situation in mam mals (Cros et al, 1998).…”

“…Extracts were dried under nitrogen, reconstituted in 0.5 M phosphate-gelatine buffer, pH 7.6 and steroids measured by radioimmunoassay (RIA): E 2 (Guerreiro et al, 2002) and 17,20bP (Canario et al, 1989) and testosterone. The testosterone antiserum was kindly donated by Dr. A.P.…”

“…* and ** indicate statistically significant differences at P < 0.05 and P < 0.01, respectively, from the values of the control scales (n = 8 samples; one sample from one fish). estrogen in the scale osteoclasts of freshwater teleosts was higher than that in those of marine teleosts (Persson et al, 1994;Persson et al, 1995;Guerreiro et al, 2002). We believe that osteoclasts in freshwater teleosts have some important roles in calcium metabolism as compared with those in marine teleosts.…”
