Calcitonin therapy of aneurysmal bone cysts

Abstract: Seven aneurysmal bone cysts (ABC) were treated with the hormone calcitonin. Six of the cysts, which were hypovascular responded well to the calcitonin administered directly into the cyst. Ossification and rebuilding of the ABC occurred after some months in every case. One hypervascularized ABC, however, failed to respond either to embolo-therapy or to the calcitonin hormone treatment. The authors recommend calcitonin administration as a useful non-invasive method for the treatment of hypovascular ABC.

“…Calcitonin and methylprednisolone acetate injections are effective treatments for surgically inaccessible or high-risk patients [46] . They inhibit osteoclastic activity and promote bone growth [9,46] , and, although they seem to achieve only partial healing, they provide great symptomatic relieve to patients [10] .…”

“…They inhibit osteoclastic activity and promote bone growth [9,46] , and, although they seem to achieve only partial healing, they provide great symptomatic relieve to patients [10] . All 3 patients treated with calcitonin and methylprednisolone injections had tumor recurrence and later required multiple interventions including surgery to achieve adequate disease control.…”

“…Besides profuse bleeding, the risk of growth plate lesions in young children and recurrence make the operative treatment challenging [3,15,33]. Therefore, non-surgical methods, including sclerotherapy, selective arterial embolization, and infiltration of enhancer ossification agents, have gained attention in ABC treatment [7][8][9][10][11]. Excellent success rates associated with the use of these modalities were reported with varying complication rates [7,8,34,35].…”

“…In this series, three cysts completely and the remaining three partially healed. In one case, the treatment was discontinued because of hypersensitivity, leading to the recurrence of the lesion [11].…”
