“…In addition, there was very weak AR labeling in the gubernaculum itself during the critical window. Taken together, these findings suggest that the inguinal MFP, a target organ of the GFN, may be the site of trophic signals to masculinize the GFN, which is known to be critical for testicular descent [14,18,19].…”

“…Also, it is the site of the most active apoptosis in vitro in the absence of CGRP in the medium [18] (Chan et al, in press, 2009). Several studies have shown that CGRP is one of the key regulatory molecules in rat gubernacular growth [7,12]. These results lead us to postulate that the rat gubernaculum may grow out of the abdominal wall in a manner analogous to an embryonic limb bud, which contains a distal region of undifferentiated fibroblasts that multiply to produce all the structures in the fully grown limb.…”

“…Recent evidence suggests that androgens act mostly indirectly on the gubernaculum via the genitofemoral nerve, which releases a neurotransmitter, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) [10,11]. Exogenous CGRP is known to induce proliferation in the rat gubernaculum in vitro and in vivo and has also been shown to inhibit apoptosis in the tip of the gubernaculum ( [12]; Chan et al, in press, 2009).…”
