Calcified intervertebral disc herniation in a child with myelopathy treated with laminoplasty

Abstract: Study design: Case report. Objective: To describe a case of pediatric calcified intervertebral disc herniations at the cervical-thoracic junction surgically treated with laminoplasty. Methods: A 13-year-old girl with calcified intervertebral disc herniations at C7/Th1 and Th1/2 causing myelopathy was performed with laminoplasty . Results: Postoperative course was without complication, and the neurologic examination returned to a completely normal state at 5 years to date after surgery. Conclusions: Laminoplast… Show more

“…These symptoms have been observed in most cases. 5,10,18 This may be supporting evidence for the hypothesis that the blood and nutrition supply to the intervertebral disk or vertebral body complex is disrupted in some cases, which induces vasculitis. 18 Computed tomography or MRI can detect an associated disk herniation.…”

“…Surgical interventions have been reported in a few cases with a progressive neurologic deficit. [3][4][5][6] However, other studies have stressed that the remission of symptoms occurred with conservative treatments in several cases. [7][8][9][10] This article describes a case of a girl with a single-level calcified cervical disk that had herniated into the spinal canal and caused nerve root compression.…”

“…Methods of operative treatment for thoracic disk herniation in children include decompressive laminectomy, [1][2][3][4] posterior diskectomy, 5,6 and laminoplasty. 7 In the current study, a 14-year-old girl presented with an intervertebral disk herniation at T5-T6 that was causing paraparesis. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report on this disease that was treated by transthoracic microdiskectomy without fusion.…”
