Caffeine enhances sustained attention among adolescents.

Abstract: Despite the growing interest in caffeine use and its effects among adolescents, and a large literature on caffeine and attention among adults, there is a lack of experimental work examining the impact of caffeine on sustained attention among adolescents. We evaluated the acute effects of caffeine (vs. placebo) during a long (33-min) classic vigilance task among 31 adolescents (aged 12–17; 15 female; median caffeine use = 28 mg/day). We predicted a dose-dependent effect of caffeine, which would attenuate declin… Show more

“…Caffeine is among the most consumed psychoactive substances in the world, predominantly in the form of coffee and tea (Barone & Roberts, 1996;van Dam et al, 2020). Prior research using has extensively shown that caffeine has bene cial effects on vigilance (e.g., Baker & Theologus, 1972;Cooper et al, 2021) and selective attention (e.g. Lorist et al, 1994Lorist et al, , 1996Pan et al, 2000; for reviews, see, e.g., Rogers & Smith, 2011;Einöther & Giesbrecht, 2012;McLellan et al, 2016).…”

“…Furthermore, previous research has pointed out positive effects of physical activity on attention in adolescents [33]. Some studies have explored the association of dietary patterns and of specific food components with attention in adolescence [34][35][36]. Early life factors such as birth weight and exclusive breastfeeding have also been associated with attention in adolescents [37].…”

“…Caffeine (1,3,7-trimethylxanthine) is the most widely used stimulant worldwide; thus, understanding its effects on neural activity has widespread implications for human behavior and performance. Caffeine is a stimulant that increases arousal and sustained attention, in addition to causing systemic physiological effects such as increasing blood pressure (Cooper et al 2020;Renda and De Caterina 2019). One common measure of arousal is resting-state electroencephalography (EEG), whereby spontaneous brain activity is measured in absence of any task-related effects (Newson and Thiagarajan 2019).…”
