“…Lower SCL during baseline RT performance indicated a lower tonic level of peripheral arousal in individuals with ADHD, consistent with accounts of hypoarousal (14, 15, 16, 21, 49). No group differences emerged for SCR amplitude.…”

“…Increased SCL indexes an increase in peripheral arousal, whereas increased SCR amplitude indicates a stronger, higher intensity arousal response (6). Although early studies of SC in ADHD yielded conflicting findings (10, 11, 12, 13), a number of more recent studies, benefiting from advancements in SC technique, report attenuated SCL in children with ADHD at rest and in task conditions, indicating hypoarousal (14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21). However, discrepancies still remain because some studies report no differences in SCL between adults with and without ADHD (22, 23).…”

“…Our study indicates that this may be also the case for autonomic baseline arousal, which was suggested by only a few studies so far (Lawrence et al 2005;Barry et al 2012). In addition, we revealed that this autonomic hypoarousal in ADHD is also prevalent in response towards stimuli of varying content and arousal.…”

“…One measure to refl ect autonomic baseline arousal is the assessment of the skin conductance level (SCL) which indicates sympathetic nervous system activity (Boucsein 1992). Concerning this autonomic baseline arousal, few studies observed that ADHD is associated with an overall reduced skin conductance activity (Satterfi eld and Dawson 1971;Lazzaro et al 1999;Barry et al 2012); however, there are also contradictory results revealing normal autonomic activity during rest (Iaboni et al 1997). Studies found that cortical hypoarousal seems to be normalized by MPH (Clarke et al 2003) and one study suggests that MPH, unmedicated patients were automatically members of the ADHD no MPH group.…”

“…4,5 These changes are peripheral (SCL) and central (EEG) markers of a simple increase in arousal. 6 This caffeine/arousal perspective provides the conceptual context for investigations of how caffeine affects stimulus processing, which we track using task-dependent event-related potentials (ERPs).…”
