Caffeic acid, a dietary polyphenol, as a promising candidate for combination therapy

Abstract: Increased effectiveness and decreasing toxicity are prime objectives in drug research. Overwhelming evidence suggests the use of appropriate combination therapy for the better efficacy of drugs owing to their synergistic profile. Dietary active constituents play a major role in health outcomes. Therefore, it is possible to increase the effectiveness of the drug by combining contemporary medication with active natural/semi-synthetic constituents. One such dietary constituent, caffeic acid (CA), is a by-product … Show more

“…Caffeic acid is a constituent of hydroxycinnamic acid, which is a very common dietary ingredient for humans. This acid has different biological activities, such as antibacterial activity, antioxidant properties, antiatherosclerotic activity, immunostimulant activity, anti-inflammatory/analgesic activity, antiviral activity, and cardioprotective and antiproliferative activity [ 14 ].…”

“…However, this critical point we need to confirm to future study. CA is an excellent synergy compound ( 93 ). In drug resistant Listeria monocytogenes , 1.5 mg/mL of CA in combination treatment with 50 mg/L of fosfomycin enhanced the antimicrobial activity from 5% of fosfomycin alone to 82% of the fosfomycin and CA combination, which might be by acting as the FosX gene inhibitor ( 94 ).…”

“…Our research has some limitations, because the number of clinical V. cholerae strains was small. Furthermore, since CA has synergistic effects with various pharmaceutical entities ( 93 ), antimicrobial activity in combination with CGA or caffeine could be tested. This work, however, was intended as a pilot screening, to assess the antibacterial potential of extract against V. cholerae clinical drug-resistant strains.…”
