Cadmium resistance and uptake by bacterium, Salmonella enterica 43C, isolated from industrial effluent

Abstract: Cadmium resistant bacterium, isolated from industrial wastewater, was characterized as Salmonella enterica 43C on the basis of biochemical and 16S rRNA ribotyping. It is first ever reported S. enterica 43C bared extreme resistance against heavy metal consortia in order of Pb2+>Cd2+>As3+>Zn2+>Cr6+>Cu2+>Hg2+. Cd2+ stress altered growth pattern of the bacterium in time dependent manner. It could remove nearly 57 % Cd2+ from the medium over a period of 8 days. Kinetic and thermodynamic studies based on various ads… Show more

“…Most of bacterial binding for metals follow the Langmuir isotherm. [45][46][47] According to Langmuir isotherm, the predicted maximum biosorption capacity for C. gilardii CR3 was 18.25 mg g À1 , which is very close to the experimental binding capacity q e value (18.33 mg g À1 ).…”

“…The regression coefficient (R 2 ) values of the Langmuir equation for both Cd 2+ (R 2 = 0.991) and Pb 2+ (R 2 = 0.957) conform better than those of the Freundlich equation. In addition, R L values for Cd 2+ (0.526) and Pb 2+ (0.613) are greater than "0" indicating that the sorption equilibrium is favorable with the Langmuir model as reported by Khan et al 39 . These findings are in accordance with the results of Chakravarty and Banerjee 40 and Zhai et al 15 that suggest the contribution of both electrostatic reaction and complex formation together with the high affinity of cadmium binding to the bacterial biomass.…”

“…SEM pictures established the fact that on continuous exposure, Cd could induce cell elongation and enlargement, filament breakage as well as cell deformation. Cell enlargement was also reported by Khan et al (2016) where they have attributed this phenomenon to biosorption of Cd in the bacterium Salmonella enteric 43C.…”

“…Rice fields provide conducive atmosphere for cyanobacterial growth in terms of availability of light, water and nutrients whereas in turn, these organisms provide fixed nitrogen on their turn over to the rice crop (Prasanna et al 2014). In addition to this biofertilizer potential, many researchers have also established cyanobacteria's metal binding abilities (Hazarika et al 2015;Khan et al 2016). Thus, when present in rice fields, in addition to providing fixed nitrogen, by binding metal ions from surrounding these organisms reduce the harmful metal load that the crop plants get exposed to.…”
