Cadmium Isotope Fractionation in Soil–Wheat Systems

Abstract: 18Analyses of stable metal isotope ratios constitute a novel tool to improve understanding of 19 biogeochemical processes in soil-plant systems. In this study, we used such measurements 20 to assess Cd uptake and transport in wheat grown on three agricultural soils under 21 controlled conditions. Isotope ratios of Cd were determined in the bulk C and A horizons, in 22 the Ca(NO 3 ) 2 extractable Cd soil pool and in roots, straw and grains. The Ca(NO 3 ) 2 23 extractable Cd was isotopically heavier than the Cd… Show more

“…The Cd mass fractions of soil reference materials were reported by NIST and IGGE, and most of the values for rock reference materials were determined by isotope dilution mass spectrometry in this study. With the exception of GSS‐1 and NOD‐P‐1, only minimal Cd isotope data for NIST SRM 2709, 2709a, 2711, 2711a, BIR‐1, and AGV‐2 have been reported (Cloquet et al , Pallavicini et al , Wiggenhauser et al , Palk et al , Imseng et al , Li et al ), and the Cd isotope values of some of the reference materials are reported for the first time in this study.…”

“…With advances in instrumentation, increasingly high precision Cd isotope measurement results have been reported using different chemical purification procedures and different instrumental analysis methods (e.g., Wombacher et al , Cloquet et al , Ripperger and Rehkämper , Gao et al , Schmitt et al , Xue et al , Li et al ). The Cd isotopes of different types of samples with low Cd mass fractions including organic materials, plants, carbonates, silicate rocks, river sediments, seawater and meteorites have been determined precisely and accurately (e.g., Rosman and De Laeter , Cloquet et al , Ripperger and Rehkämper , Gao et al , Wombacher et al , Schmitt et al , Abouchami et al , Pallavicini et al , Georgiev et al , Wei et al , Wiggenhauser et al , Wen et al , Hohl et al , John et al , Imseng et al , Li et al , Viehman et al ). The mass bias produced by the instrument has been corrected by different methods including sample‐calibrator bracketing, and the Ag doping and double spike method (Wombacher et al , Cloquet et al , Ripperger and Rehkämper , Schmitt et al , Li et al ).…”

“…This observation urges caution for studies attempting to use Cd isotope variations to trace anthropogenic Cd sources to the environment. Given the somewhat surprising nature of this result, it is emphasized that the integrity of the data are beyond reasonable doubt, with the Cd isotope methods employed here being carefully validated both as part of the current (Text S4 and Table S4) and a number of previous studies [ Xue et al , , Murphy et al , , Wiggenhauser et al , ].…”

“…The quoted precision of the Cd isotope data was estimated from the reproducibility of the bracketing analyses of matching NIST 3108 Cd‐Cd DS mixtures, which was ±1 to ±2 ε 114/110 Cd (2 SD; Table S2). Additional SRMs were analyzed to validate the accuracy and precision of the isotope measurements (Table S4 and Text S4) with results in good agreement with published values [ Yi et al , ; Wombacher et al , ; Abouchami et al , ; Wiggenhauser et al , ].…”
