Cadmium bioaccumulation in organs of the scallopMizuhopecten yessoensis

Abstract: Cadmium and Zinc content was determined in organs of the Japanese scallop Mizuhopecten yessoensis, collected in 1984 from the Sea of Japan and aged between 1 and 8 yr. Under conditions of background Cd, Cd concentration in hepatopancreas and kidney increased linearly with age from 39 to 400#gg -1 dry wt in hepatopancreas, and from 100 to 640/~g g-1 dry wt in kidney. Such a pattern was not determined for Zn. Cd concentration in muscle, mantle and gill did not exceed 6/~g g -t dry wt in the oldest scallops. In s… Show more

“…This is in accordance with previous studies on bivalves (Langston & Zhou 1987, Pavicic et al 1989, Evtushenko et al 1990). In contrast, the soluble fraction I-epresented only 23 and 28% of gill Cu and Zn concentrations in natural populations of Crassostrea virginica of the Patuxent River studied by Roesijadi (1994).…”

“…Therefore, the possibility that Cd is associated with membrane components also cannot be ruled out at present. Different authors have recently proposed that Cd could play some physiological role in molluscs (Evtushenko et al 1990, Wlostowski 1992. Considering that in the digestive gland of both Pectinidae the high Cd concentration is associated with low Zn levels, it could be argued that, in these organisms, Cd plays some physiological role by substituting for Zn in digestive gland cell structures and/or enzymes.…”

“…a1 1985), is accumulated in scallop tissues with increasing age (Evtushenko et al 1990). However, as mentioned before, seasonal factors can influence metal metabolism in marine organisms.…”

“…Many molluscs accumulate high concentrations of heavy metals in the digestive gland (Ahn, Lee, Kim, Shim, & Kim, 1996;Regoli & Orlando, 1994) and particularly scallops (Evtushenko, Luk'yanova, & Belcheva, 1990;Khristoforova, Kavun, & Makhnyr, 1989;Mauri, Orlando, Nigro, & Regoli, 1990;Ray, Woodside, Jerome, & Akagi, 1984). Therefore, monitoring metal concentrations in molluscan digestive glands has been proposed for assessing marine pollution (Bryan, 1973;Cossa, 1989;Regoli & Orlando, 1994).…”
