Cadmium accumulation, distribution and metabolism in the gastropodLittorina littorea: the role of metal-binding proteins

Abstract: Cadmium, and its compounds, has been placed on the blacklists of most international pollution conventions by virtue of its toxicity, potential for bioaccumulation and persistence (Taylor, 1983).The ability of many marine molluscs, and in particular gastropods, to accumulate Cd to a high degree in apparently unregulated fashion has led to their frequent use in monitoring programmes. Thus Cd levels in the winkle,Littorina littorea(L.) closely reflect gradients in environmental contamination (Bryanet al. 1983), d… Show more

“…This is in accordance with previous studies on bivalves (Langston & Zhou 1987, Pavicic et al 1989, Evtushenko et al 1990). In contrast, the soluble fraction I-epresented only 23 and 28% of gill Cu and Zn concentrations in natural populations of Crassostrea virginica of the Patuxent River studied by Roesijadi (1994).…”

“…To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that Cd analyses have been made on the microphytobenthos of the Marennes-Oléron Bay, a biological compartment that is very abundant on all bare mudflats of this bay (Guarini et al 1998, Blanchard et al 2000. This microphytobenthos had a Cd concentration (1.22 µg g -1 dry wt) close to that measured in the planktonic diatoms collected from the Seine Bay (which is also subjected to chronic Cd pollution) and of planktonic diatoms collected in the Marennes-Oléron Bay (Miramand et al 1993(Miramand et al , 2001a (Bryan 1984, Phillips 1977, Langston & Zhou 1987. Among the molluscs, the bioaccumulation of cadmium does not seem to be linked to their taxonomic group, nor even trophic behaviour (Table 1).…”

“…Most of these species are known to bioaccumulate Cd (Bryan 1984, Phillips 1977, Langston & Zhou 1987. Among the molluscs, the bioaccumulation of cadmium does not seem to be linked to their taxonomic group, nor even trophic behaviour (Table 1).…”

“…The cadmium uptake rate in Littorina littorea reported by Langston & Zhou (1987) appears very low compared with that reported by Amiard et al (1987) and the results of the present work (Table 5). Langston & Zhou (1987), however, exposed the periwinkles in tidal tanks, and as the degree of accumulation is related to the immersion time (Langston & Zhou 1987), the difference in uptake a Calculated from regression line Mature mussels rates can probably be explained by the different exposure procedures. Salinity differences may explain why uptake rates in the present study exceed those of Amiard et al (1987).…”
