“…Another interesting breakdown is the identification of farms that entered into varying numbers of trading arrangements with foreign companies (Rambe & Agbotame, 2018). Among cacao farmers, Hernández-Núñez et al (2022) distinguished between those who have been primarily engaged in it for years (cacao farmers), those who treat cacao cultivation as one of their sources of income (diversified farmers with cacao), and those who are entering the market and looking for opportunities to invest in cacao cultivation (new cacao farmers). By summarizing the relevant research results, we found that the main characteristics of farmers' livelihood strategies are related to regional differences, the diversity of means and needs, and differences in the conditions of the farmers themselves (Viswanathan and Shivakoti, 2008;Biswas and Mallick, 2021;Hernández-Núñez et al, 2022). Farmers' livelihood choices are closely related to the level of regional economic and social development (Su and Yin, 2020).…”

“…These households correspond to seven types that were previously classified according to their livelihood strategies by Bernal et al (unpublished data) [36] (Table 1). Semi-structured surveys with each household were carried out between 2018 and 2019 to collect information on: a. access to food; b. composition and diversity of home gardens; and c. factors that influence the characteristics of self-provisioning; for this purpose, questions were generated to characterize the seven household capitals proposed by Flora et al [37] and used in different research studies [38][39][40][41][42][43].…”
