Cable Tension Monitoring Based on the Elasto-Magnetic Effect and the Self-Induction Phenomenon

Abstract: Cable tension monitoring is important to control the structural performance variation of cable-supported structures. Based on the elasto-magnetic effect and the self-induction phenomenon, a new non-destructive evaluation method was proposed for cable tension monitoring. The method was called the elasto-magnetic induction (EMI) method. By analyzing the working mechanism of the EMI method, a set of cable tension monitoring systems was presented. The primary coil and the induction unit of the traditional elasto-m… Show more

“…The magnetoelastic inductance method is based on the magnetoelastic effect and the electromagnetic induction principle. 21 In Zhang et al’s 21 research, the tested cables were subjected to the monotonous tension, and the obtained nonlinear tension–inductance relationships had not been explained. Therefore, the magnetization theory of ferromagnetic materials and the electromagnetic induction principle were combined to analyze the influence of the tension history on the relationship between the stress and the magnetization.…”

“…Therefore, the magnetoelastic sensors, proposed by Wang [11] and Duan et al [14], were used for cable tension monitoring. To reduce the size of the magnetoelastic sensor, the magnetoelastic inductance method [15] (MIM) was proposed. In previous studies, the relationship between stress and inductance was analyzed.…”

“…Utilizing the Villari effect, applications mainly in energetics that are based on the systematic measurement and evaluation of minor magnetization loops have been found [33]. With respect to the magnetometry utilization for simpler planar and spatial geometric objects [34], 1D and 2D geometry [35] is mostly used-the signal is sensed on the surface of the material and it is not emitted to the surroundings. The miniaturization of the sensors in the form of MEMS (micro electromechanical systems) [36] allows embedding them into the construction for online monitoring of the analyzed elastic properties of components.…”
