Cabergoline-induced tricuspid regurgitation: Case report and review of literature

Abstract: The increased risk of cardiac valve disease in patients treated for Parkinson's disease with cabergoline has raised concerns about the safety of treatment with ergot-derived dopamine agonists in patients with endocrine diseases, especially prolactinoma. Concern is raised because the use of cabergoline was associated in one study with an increased prevalence of moderate tricuspid regurgitation, and in two other studies with mild tricuspid regurgitation. Furthermore, the use of cabergoline was associated with in… Show more

“…One case of moderate tricuspid regurgitation has been reported; however, no morphological features of CAV were found on the echocardiogram, and the patient had only had a cumulative cabergoline dose of 48 mg. These findings together would make CAV less likely [ 13 ].…”

“…So, Bhat M.H. et al gave an example of the cabergoline-induced tricuspid regurgitation in a woman with microprolactinoma who took cabergoline at a low dose [ 42 ]. Thus, the decision to discontinue medication should be made only after reviewing a series of echocardiography obtained in the view of drug-induced valvulopathy or carcinoid heart disease [ 39 ].…”
