“…Hence, there existed a time node (10 min) that could divide the whole reaction process of ACE into two different stages: an initial stage for rapid degradation, and then a long stage for rate declining. 18 When the concentration of PMS was increased from 0.5 mM to 7 mM, the k obs value in the initial 10 min was increased from 0.012 min −1 to 0.106 min −1 . Because of the buffer action of HU, the solution pH did not decrease with the increase in PMS concentration.…”

“…The addition of NBT as a quencher for O 2 ˙ − ( k = 0.9 × 10 9 M −1 s −1 ) 18 led to no obvious inhibitory effect on ACE degradation. Besides, NBT was selected as a probe to further confirm the generation of O 2 ˙ − .…”

“…Notably, the p K a of PFOA and PMS are 0.5–3.8 (ref. 33) and 9.4, 34 respectively, whereas ZnO suffers from the tendency for photocorrosion especially under UV irradiation. 22 In addition to the photocorrosion, high dosages of PMS could suppress PFOA degradation due to the self-combination reaction of SO 4 ˙ − radicals, resulting in the formation of peroxydisulfates (S 2 O 8 2− ) 35 which are weaker oxidants than sulfate radicals ( E 0 = 2.1 and 2.6 eV, respectively).…”

“…Therefore, in order to produce sufficient ROS in the reaction system, an activation process for PMS under external conditions is essential. In general, PMS can be activated by heating, 6 ultraviolet radiation, 7 ultrasound oscillation, 8 alkali activation 9 and catalytic activation. 10 Among these methods, heterogeneous catalytic activation has been focused on due to its high efficiency, no additional energy input and recyclable nature of the catalyst.…”
