Ca(II), Sr(II) and Ba(II) ion interaction with the rheumatoid arthritis drug tenoxicam: Structural, thermal, and biological characterization

Abstract: Recently, one of the most common conditions that manifests as joint and muscle inflammation is rheumatoid arthritis. One of the treatments for this arthritis includes non‐steroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) of the oxicam family, and the widest used drug in this family is tenoxicam (Tenox). In this study, the complexation properties of the drug Tenox with Ca(II), Sr(II) and Ba(II) ions in a (dichloromethane + water) binary solvent system are reported. The formed metal complexes were characterized structu… Show more

“…H 2 Ten has a ring of five-membered heteroatoms that innervates the clinical activity of the drug. Generally, H 2 Ten behaves like a bidentate ligand when it is coordinated with the metal ions by the pyridyl ring amide oxygen and nitrogen atom [9,10]. Several studies in human cancer cell lines and animal models, as well as epidemiological and clinical studies, proposed that NSAIDs require precise antineoplastic activity [11][12][13].…”

“…For example, Goia and Matijević reported the precipitation of barium naproxenate particles of different morphologies, 17 whereas Adam reported the structural, thermal, and biological characterization of Sr( ii ) and Ba( ii ) ion complexes with the rheumatoid arthritis drug tenoxicam. 18 In turn, Stahl et al determined the crystal structure of strontium diibuprofenate dihydrate, 19 while Khazaeli et al investigated the formulation of ibuprofen beads by ionotropic gelation. 20 Finally, Kobelnik et al studied dehydration and thermal decomposition of strontium and barium complexes with diclofenac.…”
