“…In our patients, a simple reflection of serum levels, however, is highly unlikely to account for the elevated levels detected in saliva because even in a 5‐year follow‐up, there was no occurrence of any malignant or nonmalignant disease known to lead to a CA 19‐9 elevation such as hepatobiliary disease or obstruction, a tumor of the contralateral parotid gland, or an undetected carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma in the resected tumor. On the other hand, according to the literature, CA 19‐9 may be detected in high levels in body fluids despite normal serum CA 19‐9 6 . It remains unclear why this seems to have been the case only in single cases in our study.…”

“…The use of serologic tumor markers for pancreatic carcinoma, such as CA 19-9 has an important role in diagnosis and monitoring of patients with pancreatic malignancies. Serum elevations of CA 19-9 with highest incidence rates are reported for pancreatic carcinoma (1,20,32).…”

“…This marker is useful in following of disease and in assessing the adequacy of resection (20,21). CA 19-9 is thought to be the most reliable marker for the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer (6), and its prognostic value for the evaluation of patients with inoperable adenocarcinoma of the pancreas is important (21).…”

“…[1,6,7] CA 19-9 is a hapten of the human Lewis antigen blood group determinant with a molecular weight of 36 kD. It is found in many mucosal cells and their secretions, [8,9] and it is used for differential diagnosis and follow-up in pancreatic cancer, [1,10] as well as in follow-up assessment in hepatobiliary cancer and stomach cancer. [11] Increased levels of CA 19-9 are also found in other malignant and benign diseases.…”

“…[11] Increased levels of CA 19-9 are also found in other malignant and benign diseases. [9] CA 125 is a high-molecular glycoprotein with a molecular weight of approximately 200 kD, referred to as mucin MUC16. [12] It is a regular component of the surface epithelium of the female genital tract.…”
