C60 and C70 in a Basket? – Investigations of Mono‐ and Multilayers from Azacrown Compounds and Fullerenes

Abstract: was studied by similar techniques. Na-[Co("CO),] was synthesized by Hieber's cyanide method [I I]. The product was isolated as an analytically pure solid on saturation of the water solution with NaCi followed by continuous extraction with Et,O. The extract was dried with Na,SO, and finally evaporated to dryness. Typical yields were 60% based on the 'CCO introduced. PPN[CO('~CO),] was prepared by a metathesis reaction between PPNCI and Na[Co("CO),] in CH,OH/H,O.[CO,('~CO),,I: To a suspension of N~[CO('~CO),] (4… Show more

“…Interestingly, although an aza-crown ether decorated with lipophilic fragments was the first system ever reported to complex fullerenes in solution, 38 crown ethers have scarcely been explored as hosts for fullerenes. Indeed, despite the importance of both kinds of molecules, whose discoverers were each awarded a Nobel Prize, 39 , 40 to the best of our knowledge, a detailed experimental and theoretical study on the supramolecular interactions occurring between them has not been properly addressed thus far and many open questions still remain unanswered.…”

“… [13] By contrast, C 60 in the solid state exhibited clear absorption bands in the visible region, because the forbidden transitions of C 60 was relaxed through perturbation of the wavefunctions by the neighboring molecules [14] . An additional absorption was observed around 450 nm, which was ascribed to the intermolecular charge transfer (CT) band [6, 7, 14, 15] . The absorption intensity in the UV region drastically decreased because the forbidden vibronic transitions gain intensity at the expense of the allowed electronic transitions [13, 16] .…”

“…10,11 Since then, a number of covalent fully organic receptors have been reported in the He received an ICREA-Acadèmia Award in 2010 and an ERC-StG project in 2011. Ringsdorf and Wennerström reported the first examples of covalent molecular receptors for fullerenes in 1992.…”
