C−BN Patterned Single-Walled Nanotubes Synthesized by Laser Vaporization

Abstract: We report on the synthesis of C-BN single-walled nanotubes made of BN nanodomains embedded into a graphene layer. The synthesis process consists of vaporizing, by a continuous CO2 laser, a target made of carbon and boron mixed with a Co/Ni catalyst under N2 atmosphere. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and nanoelectron energy loss spectroscopy (nanoEELS) provide direct evidence that boron and nitrogen co-segregate with respect to carbon and form nanodomains within the hexagonal lattice o… Show more

“…Following the advances in experimental growth of hybrid C-BN nanostructures, [7][8][9] the stability of domain-separated C and BN nanosheets and nanotubes has been studied by first-principles simulations in the last few years. [10][11][12][13][14] There is general agreement that segregation is energetically advantageous, because B-N and C-C bonds are more stable than C-N and C-B bonds and the former are favored by the formation of C and BN domains.…”

“…[10][11][12][13][14][15][16] Also nanotubes of BN/C in various patterns were synthesized experimentally. [17][18][19] Owing to synthesis of single layer composite structures consisting of adjacent BN and graphene domains, 20 C/BN core/shell (CS) structures have been a focus of interest. These structures can find novel technological applications in electronics and photonics in the view of the recent realization of nanoscale meshes or periodically patterned nanostructures.…”

“…Even this system has been theoretically investigated and has been recently synthesized experimentally. Hybrid C-BN nanotubes with BN domains have been synthesized earlier by laser vaporization however there was no report on their electronic properties 165 . Theoretical study on the same system has revealed band gap opening in such hybrid nanotubes.…”
