Button Battery Ingestion in Children

Abstract: SUMMARY Although the existence of national data on BBIs provides much-needed information on the epidemiology of these serious injuries, there are no prospective studies available to guide management decisions. As a result, treatment recommendations are primarily based on expert opinion from related clinical experience. The single-center experience of the serious esophageal BBI cases presented in this article is the largest published outside of the compiled national data and offers important lessons for the man… Show more

“…Beyond physical damage from the battery, complications have arisen where the battery was found to cause an esophageal stricture with the foreign body lodged in the esophagus surrounded by a mucus membrane, and, moreover, they have even been reported to pass through the esophageal wall and remain lodged within the mucosa [12]. Batteries can cause continuous injury for weeks in pediatric patients, predisposing them to aortoesophageal fistulas in addition to strictures [29]. …”

“…oesophago-aortic fistulas) and long-term oesophageal stricture formation escalate significantly, especially when extraction is delayed >15 hours after ingestion. [21][22][23] Coins remain the most commonly ingested foreign body [5,24] locally and internationally, followed by other plastic and metal objects, especially toy parts. Most (>80%) round objects such as coins, marbles and button batteries are likely to pass through the rest of the GIT spontaneously and uneventfully if they have traversed the cricopharynx.…”
