“…This view is substantiated by several facts: 1) The NBEI has usually been reported to be enzymatically hydrolysable, with release of all or several of the iodinated constituents of normal thyroglobulin (de Groot et al 1958;Courvoisier et al 1959;de Grool 8c Stanbury 1959;Chavarria et al 1960;Werner et al 1957Werner et al , 1960Dowling et al 1961;Hutchison 1961;Kahn et al 1962). “…Whitelaw et al (1956) reported a case of hypothyroidism without goitre but with increased protein-bound iodine (PBI) in the serum and a large amount of some unidentified iodoprotein which did not move from the origin on chromatography. Since then, several reports have appeared dealing with the occurrence of NBEI in goitrous hypothyroid patients (Zondek et al 1958;Courvoisier et al 1959; de Groot 8c Stanbury 1959;Mahaux et al 1959;Chavarria et al 1960;McGirr et al 1960;Werner et al 1960;Hutchison 1961;van Wyk et al 1961van Wyk et al , 1962. In 1957, Werner et al reported a case with hypopituitarism and no goitre in which there was an increased amount of non butanol extractable iodine (NBEI) in the serum.…”

“…In addition to defects i iodotyrosyl coupling (155), deiodination (156,157), conversion of iodide to organic form (158), a defect in iodine trapping or concentration was described (159). In the remaining group an abnormal serum iodoprotein is present, as evidenced by decreased extracta bility into acid butanol (160,161).…”
