Business Network Simulation: Combining Research Cases and Agent-Based Models in a Robust Methodology

Abstract: This paper describes the use of an agent-based model (ABM) with the purpose of simulating interaction processes in business networks. Such an ABM must be able to capture time and process in networks while retaining a level of comprehension and overview. The ABM rests on the assumption that business networks can be viewed as complex adaptive systems (CAS) and draws on the opportunities to build and use ABMs to simulate processes in such systems. This paper outlines the conceptual foundations and the methodologi… Show more

“…It is of such complexity that the ABM becomes complex enough so that we need qualitative data (Miles and Huberman, 1994; Morgan and Smircich, 1980) to use for validation of the ABM (Moss and Edmonds, 2005). Case studies are particularly suitable for creating accounts of networks (Dubois and Gadde, 2002) and for uncovering its mechanisms and processes (Pettigrew, 1997) something that is of significance when designing experiments in an ABM (Prenkert, 2012), because it relies on a formalized specification of its mechanisms and processes (Gilbert, 2008). Hence, the choice of a qualitative approach stems from the nature of the social phenomena of investigation (Morgan and Smircich, 1980).…”

“…Prenkert (2012) argued that despite the fact that there are religious rights for employees who are covered under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964; religious conflict is becoming common in this modern world, compared to some few decades ago when the workplace was more homogenous. The controversy in the literature makes the focus of the study also very much relevant.…”

“…The Greek word nomogenesis is comprised of nomo-, meaning law, order, arrangement, or systematized knowledge of something; and – genesis, meaning origin or source or where something comes from. Thus, nomogenesis can be said to mean the origin or production of law and systematics – or in short, the “lawful production” of something (Prenkert, 2012, p. 86) – and describes the type of causal mechanism prevalent in business networks.…”
