Business Models Innovation for Sustainable Urban Mobility in Small and Medium-Sized European Cities

Abstract: Bad air conditions, limitless traffic, overloaded parking spaces are just some of the modern mobility problems that strike cities on a daily basis. The European Commission strives to address these issues by providing measures to improve the urban mobility situation in the small and medium-sized cities. The SUITS project (Supporting Urban Integrated Transport Systems: Transferable Tools for Authorities), which is financed under the umbrella of the HORIZON 2020 programme, aims at increasing the capacity of local… Show more

“…The living intellectual activity producing knowledge is a sophisticated subject, including ingenuity and networking, building new links between people and companies, and the search for innovative solutions [95,96]. Today, neural technologies are still not able to simulate the total universe of knowledge production by humans, neuro-communications are limited in quality, precision and capacities, AR and VR (augmented and virtual reality) applications are bounded by the technologies progress and neural-physiological studies, and big data analysis and machine learning do not allow the similar creativity that could be compared with the human ingenuity [97][98][99][100][101]. Digital regulation is efficient in routine operations, but still is less efficient in helping to solve non-standard problems [102,103].…”

“…Today, the transport sector produces about a quarter of the continent's total greenhouse gas emissions [63]. The mobility system contributed to the creation of evident problems within European and world cities: heavy traffic, poor air quality, noise pollution and a high level of CO 2 [64]. Citizens' dependence on owned vehicles and their addiction to fossil fuels contribute to the problems described above and favour wasted time and productivity.…”

“…This new ecosystem also embraces the current auto industry and all the technological changes that are occurring within its products, such as the introduction of engines powered by renewable energy [Rajashekara, 2013] and ICT technologies that are allowing automotive vehicles to become increasingly autonomous [Burns, 2013]. It also embraces a multitude of start-ups and new business models [Bellini et al, 2019] that are emerging and turning the vehicle into something shared and connected with other transport hubs that provide mass and micro mobility [Jittrapirom et al, 2017;Chong et al, 2011;Ho et al, 2018;Smith et al, 2018].…”
