Business model innovation: a review of the process-based literature

Abstract: Research on business model innovation (BMI) processes is blossoming and expanding in many directions. Hence, the time is ripe to summarize and systematize this body of knowledge for the benefit of current and future BMI scholars. In this article, we take stock of the current literature to clarify the concept of a BMI process, develop a categorization scheme (a “BMI process framework”), and discuss future research possibilities. Building on a systematic literature review of 114 papers, our categorization deline… Show more

“…Most studies on BMI frame it as a process based on these taxonomies. Andreini et al . (2021) identified five typologies of processes: cognition processes, knowledge-shaping processes, strategizing processes, value creation processes and evolutionary processes.…”

“…CBM is a class of generic sustainable business models (Bocken et al, 2013) suitable for CE application. The authors (Pieroni et al, 2019;Andreini et al, 2021) also looked into business model innovation (BMI), defined as "the design process for giving birth to a fairly new business model on the market, which is accompanied by an adjustment of the value proposition and/or the value constellation and aims at generation or securing sustainable competitive advantage, " for CE and sustainability. Both models still show constraints that are further discussed in the present study.…”

“…Three real implementation experiences or case studies (CS1, CS2, and CS3) were performed in collaboration with several stakeholders (ship owners, recyclers, textiles companies, fashion brands, and researchers) because the value creation processes for BMI involve actors across a wide variety of level spanning boundaries including not only organizational but also external actors (Andreini et al, 2021). Data were gathered during 2020-2021 to collect information on material flow, production costs, quality of the products, and logistic needs for the different value chain stages of the recovery and recycling of EoL tuna nets (Table 1).…”

“…Since then, the concept has proliferated and earned a prominence in both academia and practice [20]. A detailed review of the business model body of research, its evolution, classification of the literature, and its dynamics is out of the scope of this paper, since the scholarly work contains many such reviews already (for thorough reviews, see, e.g., [20][21][22][23][24]).…”
