Bus Rapid Transit-oriented Development: An Identification of Bus Rapid Transit System Passengers’ Modal Shift Potential Considerations

Abstract: This article explores some issues that are potentially considered by bus rapid transit (BRT) system passengers when shifting their mode of transport from driving their vehicle to taking the BRT system for the same kind of trip. The issues are explored as part of an attempt to design an appropriate BRT passengers' modal shift evaluation. The BRT passengers' modal shift evaluation is to be carried out to understand how a BRT system may influence urban development around the system and how it may trigger transit-… Show more

“…It necessitates infrastructure improvements such as BRT dedicated lanes, service integration, and operation with various intelligent transportation technologies such as Transit Signal Priority (TSP). Therefore, it is seen as an effective and inexpensive way to improve the reliability and efficiency of transit services (Prayogi and Satwikasari, 2019;Raj et al, 2013;Deng et al, 2013;Hensher and Golob, 2008).…”

It also aids in visualizing traffic performance impacts under various conditions and scenarios, allowing decision makers to select the best approach during the deployment period (Prayogi and Satwikasari, 2019;Gunawan et al, 2014;Krajzewicz et al, 2012).…”

“…Prayogi and Hantono [9] and Prayogi and Satwikasari [10] provided a summary of issues that are potentially considered by BRT passengers prior to deciding to mode shift to taking the bus rapid transit (BRT) system. The issues consist of ones related to the BRT system's service, including the systems's reliability (i.e., vehicle speed, frequency, and headway), fare competitiveness and affordability, network integration, and general comfort and safety.…”

“…Prayogi and Hantono [9] highlighted the importance of exploring the mentioned perceptions when trying to understand the BRT passengers' mode shift preference. Furthermore, Prayogi and Satwikasari [10] noted that the BRT passengers' mode shift preference may not be homogeneous among various groups of passengers. The mode shift preference may vary among passengers of different background, including different income, ownership of personal vehicle and related driving license, and age.…”
