Burnout–Depression Overlap: Exploratory Structural Equation Modeling Bifactor Analysis and Network Analysis

Burnout has been viewed as a work-induced condition combining exhaustion, cynicism, and professional inefficacy. Using correlational analyses, an exploratory structural equation modeling bifactor analysis, structural regression analyses, and a network analysis, we examined the claim that burnout should not be mistaken for a depressive syndrome. The study involved 1,258 educational staff members. Burnout was assessed with the Maslach Burnout Inventory–General Survey and depression with the Patient Health Questionnaire–9 and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Illegitimate work tasks and work–nonwork interferences were additionally measured. We notably found that (a) on average, exhaustion, cynicism, and professional inefficacy correlated less strongly with each other than with depression; (b) exhaustion―burnout’s core―was more strongly associated with depression than with either cynicism or professional inefficacy; (c) the Patient Health Questionnaire–9 did not correlate more strongly with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale than with exhaustion; (d) exhaustion and depression loaded primarily on a general distress/dysphoria factor in the exploratory structural equation modeling bifactor analysis; (e) on average, burnout and depression were related to job stressors in a similar manner; (f) work–nonwork interferences were strongly linked to distress/dysphoria. Overall, burnout showed no syndromal unity and lacked discriminant validity. Clinicians should systematically assess depressive symptoms in individuals presenting with a complaint of “burnout.”

Both geographical research on socioecological transformations and labour geography see decisive deficiencies in current capitalist structures centred around growth. To highlight possibilities of economic pluralism, both fields analyse diverse economic spaces within, next to and beyond capitalist structures. A basic assumption in transformation perspectives is that economic structures are not fixed, but can be transformed by people as economic actors. This corresponds to the concept of 'labour agency' from labour geography, i.e. that workers as active agents are able to (re)shape the structures they are embedded in.Despite those common perspectives, these threads of research coexist without having been intertwined. With a focus on wage labour, this paper addresses the potential for an integrative perspective illustrated by the example of companies owned/managed by workers. In charge of their own skills, time and resources, workers can actively break with prevalent market logics, which incentivise trading (human) resources at the lowest price possible. By rejecting core dynamics of capitalist structures, these companies illustrate the workers' potential key role in processes of socioecological transformations. Denna artikel fokuserar på Hartmut Rosas begrepp resonans och Johan Asplunds begrepp social responsivitet, som relateras till varandra i egenskap av teoretiska begrepp, och som jämförs avseende hur de använts för att beskriva fenomenet utbrändhet. Båda begreppen beskriver fundamentala mänskliga relationer och hur vi blir till som individer i interaktion med andra. Begreppen rör sig delvis på olika analytisk nivå, där social responsivitet är ett mera elementärt beteende, medan resonansbegreppet även inkluderar avancerade sociala beteenden som hänför sig till sökandet efter mening i tillvaron. I begreppens användning i relation till utbrändhet framkommer både likheter och skillnader. Asplund har en snäv syn på utbrändhet som bortfallen social responsivitet, och därmed orelaterat till utmattning. Rosa beskriver utbrändhet som bristande resonans och reciprocitet i relation till världen, med utmattning som en tänkbar bakomliggande faktor. Både Rosa och Asplund delar en bredare sociologisk analys av fenomenet utbrändhet som en konsekvens av samhällets organisering. De uttrycker därför också liknande kritik mot hur fenomenet ofta hanteras, där den utbrände lämnas att ansvara för problem som ligger utanför dennes kontroll.
