Introduction: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of suicidal ideation, suicidal attempts, and loneliness among dental and medical students in the western region of Saudi Arabia. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study investigated 607 dental and medical students and interns in private colleges in Saudi Arabia. A self-administrated questionnaire was based on the Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale. Suicidal ideation and attempts were measured by a questionnaire adopted from previous research. The data was collected at the end of the year at examination time. Results: The loneliness mean was M= 45.14 (SD 8.66). Among the participants, 37.7% had experienced suicidal ideation throughout their lives, 33.4% had experienced suicidal ideation during the previous 12 months, and 23.2% had attempted suicide. Loneliness was significantly related with suicidal ideation during the previous 12 months (p <0.001) and with suicidal attempts (p = 0.005). The results showed that the following subgroups had higher risk for suicidal ideation and suicidal attempts: female, low family income, married, and dental students. Conclusion: The high levels of suicidal ideation and attempts among dental and medical students in the western region of Saudi Arabia call for the implementation of professional counselling and health promotion programs.

Aim:To map psychological problems amongst undergraduate dental students with a focus on different time points in clinical work in seven Eastern European and Scandinavian countries. Materials and Methods:A total of 1063 3rd-and 5th-year dental students (response rate 70%) participated in this pilot study and completed a pre-tested, structured questionnaire, which collected information on sociodemographic characteristics and self-reported psychological problems. Data were analysed by bivariate and multivariate methods. Results:The majority of participants were female and were younger than male participants. Most participants, though more females than males, agreed that the clinical work of dentistry was psychologically difficult. Almost half of participants felt nervous before working with patients (N = 506, 48%) and experienced a lot of stress whilst working with patients (N = 488, 46%); almost one-third (N = 287, 27%) felt anxious/worried after working with patients. Being a 3rd-and 4th-year student (vs 5th-year) reduced the odds for anxiety after working with patients; being a 3rd-year student (vs 5th-year) increased the odds for stress whilst working with patients.Studying in countries other than Norway reduced the odds for stress whilst working with patients. Less than good self-perceived health, presence of psychological health complaints before starting dental education, female gender and lack of physical activity increased the odds for psychological problems. Conclusion:A high number of undergraduate dental students reported psychological problems in connection with clinical work. It is unlikely that "one size fits all"; therefore, further qualitative investigations on stressors in clinical learning environments should be done in order to design tailor-made supportive strategies. Purpose Studies show health professional students have a high prevalence of depression. Dental students are especially susceptible due to the burden of the highest debt, exposure to bloodborne pathogens and chronic pain frequency. However, few studies on depression among U.S. dental students exist. This study aims to determine: (1) the difference in depression prevalence between U.S. dental students, the general population, and medical students; and (2) demographic and lifestyle characteristics associated with depressive symptoms in dental students. Methods Researchers surveyed dental students in California in 2018 using a 36‐ item questionnaire. The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ‐9), a validated diagnostic screening tool, measured depressive symptoms suggesting clinically significant moderate to severe depression. Additionally, participants answered demographic and lifestyle characteristics questions. Data analysis included bivariable chi‐square tests and multivariable logistic regression. Results The response rate was 19.1%. The crude depressive symptom prevalence (27.7%) was similar to that of depression in medical students (27.2%) and higher than the U.S. population (7.7%). Bivariable analysis indicated several characteristics significantly associated (P ≤ 0.05) with moderate to severe depressive symptoms in dental students, including experience of injury/pain, financial insecurity, self‐reported minority status, perception of meaningful work, and year in school. Multivariable logistic regression modeling estimated 5 well‐being categories as significantly associated with higher odds of not having major depressive symptoms. Conclusions Prevalence of depressive symptoms among California dental students is similar to depression in medical students and higher than the general population. Results suggest a significant proportion of dental students experience moderate to severe depression and require accessible resources.
