“…Logistic regression analysis showed that the female/male ratio of BMS patients was 2.7 times that of TN patients. BMS is a disorder typically observed in middle-aged and elderly adults (15)(16)(17), and the female/male ratio is about 7:1 (15,(17)(18)(19). The National Health Interview Survey indicated that the prevalence of burning mouth in the US general population aged 18 years or older was 0.7% (0.8% of women and 0.6% of men).…”

“…Many definitions of BMS have been used in prior prevalence studies, but few would fulfill the stringent criteria applied in this study (persistent symptoms of oral discomfort, no findings on oral examination, exclusion of other causes of oral burning). Past studies have retained patients with subjective oral burning as the only inclusion criterion 3,5 or abnormal findings on oral examination, 11 which may account for the higher reported prevalence in these studies. Additionally our study observed that BMS prevalence suddenly increases after age 70 in males: why this should be the case is unclear.…”

“…The condition is extremely rare in patients under 30 years and never been reported in children and adolescence 12 . BMS has a significant female predilection with the ratio is about 7:1 [8][9][10][11]13 . These differences between genders may be explained by biological, psychological & sociocultural factors.…”
