Abstract

Further analyses have been performed on a U02-B4C fuel element which was thermally tested under both radial and axial thermal gradients. A new sampling technique was employed which permitted the division of radial samples into smaller volumes of material than was previously used for boron analyses. With this technique, the boron losses, predicted for open systems, was observed, especially in that region of the fuel which was operating above 13500C, No significant boron migration was detected in either the radial or axial directions in the fuel element, indieating that the boron losses were carried off in the flowing helium stream, verifying earlier results in open systems.
