Burkitt’s and Burkitt-like Lymphoma

Abstract: Burkitt's and Burkitt-like lymphoma (BL/BLL) are aggressive B-cell malignancies with a high proliferative rate that may be fatal within months if not treated promptly. Furthermore, treatment of BL/BLL requires comprehensive supportive care to avoid disease-related complications such as acute renal failure secondary to tumor lysis syndrome. Improvements in our understanding of the biology of BL and BLL have led to more effective therapeutic protocols. Clinical trials have demonstrated that short duration, multi… Show more

“…1 It may present as a very aggressive disseminated disease with bone marrow (BM) and/or central nervous system (CNS) involvement. [1][2][3] As the Ann Arbor staging system is unable to fully describe the extranodal involvement, the St Jude/Murphy system is usually used to stage BL. 1 St Jude/Murphy stage IV designates exclusively the high-risk group of patients with BM and/or CNS involvement.…”

“…BL is an aggressive B cell malignancy with a high proliferative rate that may be fatal within months if not treated promptly (1). Activation of the c-myc oncogene through reciprocal chromosomal translocations that juxtapose c-Myc to one of the Ig loci characterizes most BLs (2).…”

“…In recent times BL was treated with CHOP (cyclophosphamide, hydroxydaunorubicin (also called doxorubicin or adriamycin), vincristine, prednisone or prednisolone) and Hyper-CVAD, then made between 1989-1996 NCI study, the more complex and more interest was the subject of an intensive treatment regimen. This so-called alternating cycles of CODOX-M/IVAC given cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine and high-dose methotrexate and ifosfamide, etoposide and consists of high-dose cytosine arabinoside [5,6].…”

“…The cure rate may be lower if the cancer spreads to the bone marrow or spinal fluid. The outlook is poor if the cancer comes back after a remission [4][5][6]. We presented a case of presenting with rapidly and multi organ involvement with BL.…”
