I mean: what musical language to compose in? There were many available in the 1930s [...] What was the language of this symphony? A language altogether proper for a young man composing music in England in 1935. Diatonic, swift to modulate, inclined to the modal, Vaughan Williams harmonies, occasional tearing dissonance like someone farting at a teaparty, bland, meditative, with patches of vulgar triumph.Totally English music, hardly able to jump twenty-two miles into Europe (Burgess 2001, 23).Burgess musste sich mit den Jahren eingestehen, dass er nicht zum Komponisten bestimmt war. Dieses Selbstbekenntnis und die damit vollzogene "Entzauberung" der eigenen künstlerischen Ideale trafen ihn anfänglich hart. Aus Trotz und Resignation darüber, dass seine Werke nicht gedruckt, geschweige denn aufgeführt wurden, begann er einen Roman zu schreiben, der auch prompt veröffentlicht wurde. Der sich allmählich einstellende literarische Erfolg, den er zunächst als "unwanted literary gift" (Burgess 2001, 33) abtat, kompensierte offensichtlich die musikalischen Misserfolge, was zur Konsequenz hatte, dass Burgess begann, sein kompositorisches Selbstverständnis grundlegend zu überdenken: No one could earn his living as a composer, but what sort of a composer was I? [...] I, once destined to be a new Debussy, was pursuing a nice hobby. [...] At home in the evening I toiled at a score too strenuous for a nice hobby, knowing that it would never be played. [...] Weary of scoring and the high price of manuscript paper, one day I started to write a novel. It was published, and I now had another nice hobby. But, later, an invalid, informed that I probably had a year to live, jobless and pensionless, I had to turn the writing of fiction into my profession.. I survived the terminal year, and so did the profession (Burgess 2001, 33f.). In diesem Passus spricht Burgess einen Wendepunkt in seinem Leben an: Im Jahre 1959 diagnostizierten die Ärzte bei ihm einen inoperablen Gehirntumor. Man prognostizierte, dass er nur noch zwölf Monate zu leben habe. Von da an fiel Burgess in einen Schaffensrausch und publizierte innerhalb seines vermeintlich letzten Lebensjahres ganze fünf Romane. Die Einschätzung der Ärzte bewahrheitete sich jedoch nicht -Burgess überlebte die Prognose um über dreißig Jahre und sollte in dieser Zeit mehr als 50 Bücher veröffentlichen. Das Schreiben wurde zur Priorität. Komponieren empfand Burgess fortan als Therapie, als eine Art kathartischen Akt, den er bis zu seinem Tod im Jahre 1993 als notwendigen Ausgleich zu seiner unermüdlichen, schriftstellerischen Tätigkeit betrieb:One thing I discovered when I had completed my third novel was that it was a temperamental necessity for me to cleanse my mind of verbal preoccupation by composing music. It no longer mattered whether the music would ever be heard: music was a kind of therapy.
