Burden of osteoporosis in Vietnam: An analysis of population risk

Abstract: Purpose To estimate the proportion of men and women aged 50 years and older who would be classified as "high risk" for fracture and eligible for anti-fracture treatment. Methods The study involved 1421 women and 652 men aged 50 years and older, who were recruited from the general population in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Fracture history was ascertained from each individual. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured at the lumbar spine and femoral neck by DXA (Hologic Horizon). The diagnosis of osteoporosis was… Show more

“…Although our study included young patients with a mean age of 32.4 years, osteoporosis prevalence was similar to that of the reference older Vietnamese population (≥50 years), that is, one‐third of patients had osteoporosis in both sexes. 19 Notably, our linear regression model showed weak relationships between age and BMD at most sites in both sexes. Current observations indicate that osteoporosis prevalence increases with age.…”

“…Although our study included young patients with a mean age of 32.4 years, osteoporosis prevalence was similar to that of the reference older Vietnamese population (≥50 years), that is, one-third of patients had osteoporosis in both sexes. 19 20 The equal prevalence of osteoporosis in our younger patients and the older reference population and weak effect size of age to BMD suggest that, in addition to age, there are hidden risk factors for osteoporosis in adults with CHD.…”

“…8,9 In Vietnam, both men and women are at high risk of osteoporosis. [10][11][12][13] Alendronate, etidronate, ibandronate, and risedronate are only a few of the medications being increasingly used to treat and prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and those taking chronic corticosteroids. However, these drugs have numerous side effects, including hypocalcemia, kidney impairment leading to renal failure, and gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, indigestion, and diarrhea).…”
