Burden of non-communicable diseases in Cyprus, 1990–2017: findings from the Global Burden of Disease 2017 study

Abstract: Background Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) accounted for over 90% of all deaths in the Cypriot population, in 2018. However, a detailed and comprehensive overview of the impact of NCDs on population health of Cyprus over the period of 1990 to 2017, expressed in disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), is currently not available. Knowledge about the drivers of changes in NCD DALYs over time is paramount to identify priorities for the prevention of NCDs in Cyprus and guide evidence-based decision… Show more

“…This might, for instance, be explained by the higher prevalence of smoking and lower control of hypertension among Cypriots. 18,38,39 Germans aged ≥15 years were less likely to be current tobacco smokers than were Cypriots in 2016 (30.7% versus 36.2%), and German men and women had higher hypertension control rates than did Cypriot men and women in 2019 (43.2% versus 30.0% and 48.0% versus 37.6%, respectively). 18,39 The fastest and third fastest increase in the age-standardized DALY and death rate attributable to ischemic stroke between 2020 and 2030 was projected to occur in Senegal and Ecuador.…”

“…In a study of a regional hospital in Tanzania, MVC's were the cause of 60% of all emergency room visits [10]. The major European causes of injury are MVC's, falls and self‐harm [11]. In KZN, the rates of emergency room attendance for assault/intentional trauma are significantly higher than for non‐intentional trauma [1, 2].…”

“…For the past 30 years, the estimated burden of disease, across all age and gender groups in Cyprus, remained stable for the following conditions: ischemic heart disease, cancer, low back pain and diabetes (type 2) ( 14 ). Based on the need to prioritize the management of patients with these chronic conditions, and shifting resources towards COVID-19 and other emergencies, we propose the development of the five-district model (FDM).…”
