Burden of illness of rheumatoid arthritis in Latin America: a regional perspective

Abstract: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is one of the most important rheumatic diseases. Its prevalence varies among ethnic groups. Genetic and environmental factors influence its incidence and prevalence. This chronic disease will increase its frequency in the future due to population aging. The personal impact of this disease on many relevant areas of an individual requires special efforts to prevent and treat it properly. Adequate advice on several recently described risk factors such as tobacco and alcohol exposure, inf… Show more

“…The disease is complex and involves environmental factors that trigger the disease in genetically susceptible individuals [ 1 ]. RA prevalence is around 1% around the world but this number changes in different ethnic populations [ 2 ]. Early therapeutic intervention with disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) including methotrexate (MTX), biological treatments, and Janus Kinase inhibitors are supposed to halt inflammation, improve symptoms and signs, and preserve structural integrity of the joints in RA [ 3 ].…”

“…Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease of unknown etiology that is characterized by polyarticular pain and swelling. [1,2] RA should be diagnosed and treated early in order to limit joint damage, associated complications, and progressive disability. [3] The worldwide prevalence of RA is estimated to be around 1%, with considerable variation depending on the population studied.…”

“…The worldwide prevalence of rheumatoid arthritis is approximately 1%, and in Mexico, it affects 1.6% of the general population and is the main reason for consultation in rheumatology services (this value can vary, depending on the geographic region, ranging from 0.7 to 2.8%), and is a chronic and progressive autoimmune disease more common in women than men (3 : 1). Although gender‐based differences may play a complex role in promoting an autoimmune dysfunction, to date the comprehensive knowledge of the link between gender and RA is still partially lacking …”
