Burden of hypertension in China: A nationally representative survey of 174,621 adults

Abstract: Among Chinese adults, more than one forth had hypertension and the prevalence has increased significantly during recent decades. Despite huge efforts, the levels of awareness, treatment and control rates of hypertension remain extremely low, foreshadowing substantial unnecessary disease burden.

“…It was also found that the influencing factors for hypertension in our study were increasing age, gender, living in urban areas, overweight/obesity, physical inactivity, and family history of hypertension. This was partly consistent with many other previous studies [12,[14][15][16]. Our study also showed that highly educated people usually had a lower rate of hypertension than those with low education levels.…”

“…Our study addressed a gap in intergroup variations in individual cardiovascular risk factor prevalence, which had several [21]. In addition to differences in genetic backgrounds, dietary intake of high salt and high fat appeared to be major environmental factors that contributed to high BP in this ethnic group, especially for Kazakh nomads; this is supported by this study and our previous study [13].…”

“…A national epidemiological investigation [4] found that the prevalence of hypertension increased from 18.0% to 27.8% from 2002 to 2013 in China, which means that there were 139 million newly diagnosed patients with hypertension. Therefore, it is likely that HT will continue to increase.…”

“…Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the most significant of these noncommunicable diseases because its burden has become increasingly severe [2]. At present, there are over 100 million people with CKD in China [3], a prevalence that most likely will continue to increase due to the increasing incidence of hypertension [4], obesity [5], and type 2 diabetes mellitus [6,7] and due to the increasing average age of the population [8]. Therefore, updated epidemiological studies evaluating the spectrum of kidney diseases that lead to CKD are needed for the purposes of improving patient care, disease prevention, and public health interventions.…”
