Burden of Disease of Multiple Sclerosis in Korea

Abstract: OBJECTIVESMultiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. There are few reports on the burden of disease of MS, worldwide. The authors aim to estimate burden of disease and estimate the epidemiologic indexes of MS in Korea using available epidemiologic data.METHODSEpidemiologic indexes were computed using DISMOD II software based on prevalence from nationwide survey, incidence estimated from extrapolation, mortality from National Statistics Office, and duration o… Show more

“…6,7,[16][17][18][19][20] The incidence of multiple sclerosis in Korea is 0.1 per 100,0000. 11 The association of multiple sclerosis and adult optic neuritis in Korea is not known. Because the incidence of multiple sclerosis in Korea is low, the conversion rate of optic neuritis to multiple sclerosis is presumed to be low and studies on the conversion rate of optic neuritis to multiple sclerosis in Korea are rare.…”

“…7 The clinical characteristics of optic neuritis and multiple sclerosis have been reported to vary by race. Multiple sclerosis is rare in Korea, Japan, and China, 11,12 and the prognosis for optic neuritis in these countries is quite different from that in Europe or North America.…”

“…This has previously been used to model the burden of a wide range of other diseases, such as diabetes [14,15], multiple sclerosis [16], schizophrenia [17], and malaria [18]. The mathematical model of DisMod II is a multistate life table describing a single disease, where transition hazards define the relationships between three states: healthy, diseased, and dead [19] (fig.…”

“…Initially used to estimate burden of disease in major world regions 13 , DALY has been employed to estimate burden of disease of countries 14,17,18 , regions of countries 19 , and cities 20 , and even to evaluate the burden of specific diseases 21 . In addition, since DALY is quite sensitive for measuring health inequalities, it can also be used to identify the population's most vulnerable groups 22 .…”
