Numerous studies have revealed that adverse health issues are common in demented caregivers; however, less is known about the health consequences of spouse caregivers. The purpose of this study was to compare the psychological health of spousal and non-spousal caregivers of demented individuals. In addition, it also examined the association and strength of the relationship between spouse and non-spousal caregivers’ socio-economic condition. This was a cross-sectional study that included 136 caregivers of demented individuals. Among them, 55.89% ( n = 76) were a spouse. The findings suggest that spousal caregivers who care for their demented spouse feel higher anxiety and depressive symptoms as compared with non-spousal caregivers. Socio-demographic factors were shown to be an important predictor of spousal caregivers’ mental health condition. The findings of this study have major policy implications owing to the predicted increase in demand for caregivers, especially spousal caregivers, as the incidence rate of dementia rises over time. It is essential that we endorse not only the health of the care-recipient but also the spousal caregiver as well. We believe that improving access to caregivers’ respite programs would benefit spousal caregivers.

Introduction: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a prevalent and underdiagnosed condition in chronic kidney disease (CKD), that shares common pathophysiological factors such as chronic inflammation. Objective: To evaluate the association of MCI in CKD stages 1-5 using inflammatory markers and changes by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Patients and Methods: Cross-sectional study in adult patients with pre-dialysis CKD. MCI was assessed by the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) by the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration equation. Sociodemographic and clinical data were collected from medical records. The cytokines IL-4, IL-6, IL-17, TNF-α and hs-CRP were determined. Brain MRI was performed in a 1.5 Tesla device, without paramagnetic contrast. A descriptive analysis followed by a comparison of abnormal versus normal MoCA scores among all studied variables. A linear regression analysis was performed using MoCA as a dependent variable, adjusted for confounding factors. Results: Of 111 invited patients, eighty completed the neuropsychological assessment and 56 underwent MRI, and were included in the study. Mean age was 56.3 ± 8.3 years and 51.8% (n = 29) had altered MoCA. When compared to the group with normal MoCA, the group with altered MoCA had higher levels of IL-6 and IL-17. There was no correlation between altered MoCA with eGFR or with MRI abnormalities. Conclusão: MCI assessed by MoCA was prevalent in patients with pre-dialysis CKD, it was associated with inflammation and showed no correlation with MRI changes.

The Amazon rainforest is an essential source of scientific knowledge, so several research groups seek to understand the role of Amazonian compounds in diseases. Among the vast flora, Himatanthus sucuuba has a variety of therapeutic purposes and is used for the first time in the neuroprotection induced by Paraquat (PQ) in Drosophila melanogaster. In our study, we carried out phytochemical assays with the hydroalcoholic extract of H. sucuuba, revealing qualitatively classes of secondary metabolites and quantitatively total phenols (43.33 mg GAE/g extract-1), total flavonoids (44.09 mg GAE/G Extract- 1) and antioxidant activity via DPPH and ABTS. Furthermore, exposure of adult D. melanogaster (wild strain, Canton Special) to PQ for 15 days caused increased oxidative stress, as evidenced by elevated levels of protein carbonyls, lactate, and acetylcholinesterase and citrate synthase activities. However, the diet supplemented with H. sucuuba (0.1 mg/mL) for 15 days prevented damage from oxidative stress triggered by PQ. Our study aims to demonstrate the protective effect of H. sucuuba extract on D. melanogaster exposed to PQ. Based on our results, we suggest that extracts from the bark of H. sucuuba can prevent or minimize human diseases caused by oxidative stress. Therefore, further studies on the mechanisms involved in such activities will be necessary.
