Introduction: Stroke causes a high burden of death and disability all over the world. The majority of stroke survivors continue to have difficulties, and their families must shoulder a considerable portion of the expenditures of ongoing rehabilitation and long-term care. In India, stroke rehabilitation is still underachieved due to various reasons leading to delay or incomplete recovery of the patients thus adding up more burden on the caregivers. Thus, studying the caregiver burden of stroke rehabilitation will help policymakers tackle this issue faced by our lower economically challenged citizens.Objectives: The objective is to measure the perceived burden on caregivers during stroke rehabilitation.Methods and materials: The observational study was conducted by interviewing the stroke survivors' caregivers and visiting the physiotherapy OPD using the caregiver burden scale/questionnaire.Results: The study had 76 caregivers, 51.32% were women and 48.68% were men. The average age for caregivers was 42 years and 55 years for patients. The average duration of giving care was six months. The perceived caregiver burden score was low (mean-19.61) suggesting that not all assistance is associated with stress. The correlation of each burden measure with Modified Rankin Scale for disability is significantly correlated (r=0.7, P<0.0001). Further investigation revealed that caregivers had considerably higher levels of stress when the patient needed to exercise, walk or use the restroom. A low yearly income, a higher secondary education, and a small number of family members were shown to be connected with individuals who scored the highest on stress.Conclusion: Based on this study, we conclude that people with low income residing in nuclear families require more support for caregiving during rehabilitation. We recommend that health and welfare policy measures be developed to lessen caregiver burden in order to improve caregivers' post-stroke experiences.

Objectives Stroke is a significant global public health challenge attributable to an array of disabilities it causes alongside an impairment in cognition. The monetary impact of stroke care includes acute treatment expenses as well as outrageous expenses of postdischarge chronic hospital care and rehabilitation services. The current study aimed to study the perceptions along with experiences of stroke survivors and caregivers. Materials and Methods In-depth interviews (IDIs) of stroke survivors and their primary caregivers were conducted at their home 2 months after their discharge from the hospital in Bhopal, India. These IDIs were later analyzed. Results The following eight themes emerged: pervasive and irreversible, multifunction loss and dependency, holistic impact on the health of person and family, money and matter, nonaccommodative cost and baffled belief, professional paralysis, social crisis, and slow and obscured progress. The added obligation of taking care of a disabled stroke survivor along with adjusting their own lifestyle with financial apprehensions, worry about future, prolonged hours of care, and stress are major factors that increase the burden of the caregivers. Conclusion Caregivers should be sensitized with proper counseling and training through health care institutions to ensure appropriate care and management of stroke survivors at home, as it will also help in addressing their psychosocial needs, and minimizing the knowledge gap, doubts and uncertainties about the disease and its aftereffects.

IntroductionStroke is a leading cause of death and disability and has been identified as a significant public health problem. Residual functional deficits negatively affect the stroke survivor’s functional independence and quality of life. Rehabilitation is necessary for them to regain lost skills, relearn tasks and be independent again.Methodology and analysisA scoping review will be conducted to map available literature on factors influencing utilisation of follow-up rehabilitation services for stroke survivors. Databases including PubMed, LISTA(EBSCO), Web of Science (Clarivate), Google Scholar, Scopus and Science Direct will be searched using keyword searches for articles. The review will include studies presenting evidence on outpatient stroke rehabilitation services, studies undertaken and published in English, including grey literature. Title and abstract screening will be done simultaneously. Two reviewers will independently conduct the abstract and full-text article screening as well as pilot the data extraction form. Thematic analysis will be used to analyse the findings.Ethics and disseminationThis scoping review is part of a larger study approved by the University of KwaZulu Natal Biomedical Research Ethics Committee (Reference no. BREC/00000660/2019). The results will be disseminated through publication.
