Burd Gol Granite Massif as a product of the Late Cambrian post-orogenic magmatism in the SE part of the Lake Zone, Gobi Altay, SW Mongolia

Abstract: Intrusion of the Cambrian Burd Gol Granite Massif into the Proterozoic metamorphic rocks of the Zamtyn Nuruu and molasse-like sediments of the Boomyn Khudag Fm. culminated the collisional events of the Caledonian evolution in the SE part of the Lake Zone, Gobi Altay, SW Mongolia. The monotonous leucogranites of the Burd Gol Massif have a high-K calc-alkaline, subaluminous to slightly peraluminous geochemical signature with an intermediate initial Sr ratio ( 87 Sr/ 86 Sr 510 = 0.7064) and rather unradiogenic Nd… Show more

“…While ages of c. 430-440 Ma are not known from the Tseel and adjacent terranes (Tab. 1), ages of c. 510-530 Ma correspond well with those of magmatic rocks in the Lake Zone (e. g. Dijkstra et al 2006;Hrdličková et al 2010;Rudnev et al 2012Rudnev et al , 2013Jian et al 2014). Moreover, the age of ~740 Ma resembles that known from coarse-grained orthogneiss of the Zamtyn Nuruu range, also in the Lake Zone (Demoux et al 2009b;Hanžl et al 2014) Therefore, the lower-middle crust underlying the studied region seems to have an affinity to the Neoproterozoic rocks of the Lake Zone.…”

“…1B; Hrdlickova et al, 2010). The Burd Gol granite is believed to be a post -collisional intrusive rock (Hrdlickova et al, 2010). The age of 506 Ma is similar to that of the Leucogranite in the Hanhohiyn region although it cannot be confirmed yet that the Leucogranite originated from the post -collision magmatism.…”

“…The southern part of the orogenic belt contains the Burd Gol granite, which has an intrusive age of 506 ± 5 Ma ( Fig. 1B; Hrdlickova et al, 2010). The Burd Gol granite is believed to be a post -collisional intrusive rock (Hrdlickova et al, 2010).…”

“…Based on a concordia intercept age of 950 ± 16 Ma obtained from metabasalts, the Zamtyn Nuruu Formation has been interpreted as a basement block . U/Pb zircon ages of 542 ± 4 Ma (diorite) and 517 ± 7 Ma and 511 ± 5 Ma (granite), and monazite age of 513 ± 5 Ma have also been determined for plutonic rocks of the Zamtyn Nuruu Formation (Hanžl and Aichler, 2007;Hrdličková et al, 2010). The Zamtyn Nuruu Formation is over -thrusted by both the Alag Khadny metamorphic complex and the Maykhan Tsakhir Formation, which themselves are over -thrusted by the Khantaishir Formation .…”
