Bundle streaming service: design, implementation and performance evaluation

Abstract: We present bundle streaming service (BSS), a communication framework that allows for reliable data streaming over delay/disruptive tolerant networks. BSS improves the reception and storage of data streams through the application of sophisticated forwarding tactics and the exploitation of inherent delay/disruptive tolerant networking (DTN) architecture features. The proposed framework, which targets easy configuration and deployment, comprises two elements: a bundle forwarder and a software library. Both elemen… Show more

“…This could be a limiting factor for Future Internet data dissemination capabilities, especially when considering the fact that data streaming constitutes one of the most popular content distribution methods currently employed on the Internet. In order to compensate for this shortcoming, Bundle Streaming Service (BSS) [8] is proposed and implemented, as a practical framework through which many of the networking challenges related to both live and stored data streaming over DTNs can be addressed.…”

“…The corresponding protocols for these two solutions are described in Internet-Draft CGR [57] and RFC6693 [58] documents, respectively. Supportively, the investigations of other related issues from the research community, such as the impact of BP overhead on communication performance in various communication environments [59] [60] and the performance of inelastic applications over DTNs [8] [61], yield encouraging results.…”

“…The DTN2 reference implementation has been tested in a DTN testbed in orbit using British Disaster Monitoring Constellation satellite (UK-DMC) [13], while the ION-DTN implementation has been loaded onto the EPOXI spacecraft in deep space as part of the Deep Impact Network (DINET) experiment [14]. Our research group has significantly contributed to the evaluation of existing DTN protocols in space environment [15][16] [17], the development of new protocols [18][19] [20], mechanisms [21][22][23] [24] and services [25]. Moreover, we have developed a state-of-the-art DTN testbed for terrestrial and space communications [26][27] [28] that can be exploited to evaluate a variety of protocols under several communication scenarios.…”
