Bulk Growth and Characterization of a Novel Nonlinear Optical Crystal BaTeMo2O9

Abstract: A new nonlinear optical crystal BaTeMo2O9 was grown from the TeO2−MoO3 flux system with sufficient size (30 × 23 × 18 mm3) and optical quality that allowed the characterization of its properties. It crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetrical system, space group P21 (no. 4), with a = 5.5346 Å, b = 7.4562 Å, c = 8.8342 Å, and β = 90.897°. The as-grown BaTeMo2O9 crystal has well-developed faces with the major forms {100}, {001}, {011}, and {011̅}. The transmission spectra results suggest that it can transmit well f… Show more

“…The molybdates MLn(MoO 4 ) 2 are excellent Ln-doped laser hosts [9]. Due to strong distortion of MoO 6 octahedrons many molybdates are characterized by noncentrosymmetric crystal structure [1,2,[10][11][12][13][14]. Complex molybdates containing Ln 3 + ions in low-symmetry positions are promising for the creation of new effective laser mediums [14][15][16][17][18].…”

“…They observed the extremely strong power second-harmonic generation (SHG) efficiencies (about 600 × SiO 2 ) which attributes from the polarization attributing to the Te 4+ -O and Mo 6+ -O bonds constructively add [9]. In 2007, single crystal BaTeMo 2 O 9 (space group P2 1 , a = 5.5346Å, b = 7.4562, c = 8.8342Å,ˇ= 90.897 • , Z = 2) was synthesized from a TeO 2 -MoO 3 system by the flux method by Tao et al [10]. As a multifunctional NCS compound, the refractive index, electro-optic tensor, dielectric and piezoelectric properties of single crystal BaTeMo 2 O 9 were also measured by them [10][11][12].…”

“…Particularly interesting NLO crystals are compounds containing Mo 6 þ or W 6 þ and cations with nonbonded electron pairs such as Se 4 þ and Te 4 þ since these cations may exhibit the second-order Jahn-Teller (SOJT) effect, which leads to the noncentrosymmetric structure and strong NLO properties in some telluromolybdates, for instance β-BaTeMo 2 O 9 [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. One of promising family of telluromolybdates are ATeMoO 6 compounds (A¼Mg, Zn, Mn, Co), which crystallize in noncentrosymmetric orthorhombic crystal system with space group P2 1 2 1 2 [9][10][11][12][13].…”
