Buildings as persons: relationality and the life of buildings in a northern periphery of early modern Sweden

Abstract: The author shows how houses in the northern Baltic were constructed using two realities: the reality of timber and the equally potent reality of spirits supporting and controlling the fate of structures. Excavations in seventeenthcentury Tornio (now in modern-day Finland) showed that houses were furnished with special offerings when founded and refurbished, while evidence from living folklore suggested that the houses themselves were originally given spiritual personalities and were treated as members of the… Show more

“…These matters are covered in the following, which shares many aspects with recent Finnish archaeological studies and their lively and necessary discussion contradicting conventional views about material culture and its essence. In addition to this they also draw heavily on domestic folk beliefs, and many points made in these studies are in accordance with the observations presented here (see for example Hukantaival 2007;Herva 2009;Herva 2010;Herva & Ylimaunu 2009;Herva et al 2010).…”

“…While the exact nature of this and the other four deposits is not entirely clear, the tradition of placing coins in the foundations of buildings is well known and archaeologically attested (e.g. Hukantaival, 2006: 60-62;Korhonen, 2009: 264-267;Merrifield, 1987: 49; see also below), and other types of 'foundation deposits' have also been identified in Tornio including 'offerings' of iron, ceramics, and even bear claws (Herva, 2010;Herva and Ylimaunu, 2009;Nurmi, 2011: 146-151).…”

“…Elements of broadly animistic-shamanistic concepts of and relationships with the world persisted in the north centuries after the region had become nominally Christianized. They persisted especially in rural culture well into modern times, but were arguably of significance at least in early modern Tornio and other new towns that the Crown of Sweden founded in the previously non-urban northern parts of the kingdom in the seventeenth century (Herva, 2010;Herva and Salmi, 2010;Herva and Ylimaunu, 2009). Coins could have been imbued with meaning and special powers for various reasons.…”

“…In fact, the house is one of the cornerstones of family life in rural Europe, the central site for socialization and the spread and naturalization of customs and values through the creation of a habitus (Bourdieu 1998). The built environment plays a role in structuring social reality and cultural identities (Hillier and Hanson 1984), while functioning as the fundamental symbolic reference and cultural repository for the identities, feelings and memories of its inhabitants (Herva 2010;Kus 1997;Rapoport 1990). Therefore, the archaeological analysis of domesticity can enable us to explore cultural change in depth.…”
