Three-dimensional (3D) assemblies based on carbon nanomaterials still lag behind their individual one-dimensional building blocks in terms of mechanical and electrical properties. Here we demonstrate a simple strategy for the fabrication of an open porous 3D self-organized double-hierarchical carbon nanotube tube structure with properties advantageous to those existing so far. Even though no additional crosslinking exists between the individual nanotubes, a high reinforcement effect in compression and tensile characteristics is achieved by the formation of self-entangled carbon nanotube (CNT) networks in all three dimensions, employing the CNTs in their high tensile properties. Additionally, the tubular structure causes a self-enhancing effect in conductivity when employed in a 3D stretchable conductor, together with a high conductivity at low CNT concentrations. This strategy allows for an easy combination of different kinds of low-dimensional nanomaterials in a tube-shaped 3D structure, enabling the fabrication of multifunctional inorganic-carbon-polymer hybrid 3D materials.

Summary1. Wood decomposition is a key process in the terrestrial carbon cycle, controlling carbon storage with feedback to climate. In (sub) tropical forest, termites are major players in wood decomposition, but their role relative to that of microbial decomposers and wood traits of different tree species is poorly understood. The current literature also has strong bias towards dicot tree decomposition, while abundant woody monocots, particularly bamboos, also contribute greatly to (sub) tropical carbon cycling. 2. Here, we present the first experiment to disentangle effects of dead wood traits and termite activity on decomposition of 66 angiosperm species of wide-ranging phylogenetic position: 31 bamboos, eight non-bamboo Poaceae, 18 eudicots and nine magnoliids. We incubated dead stems of up to 4 size classes per species in a 'common garden' in tropical S China. We tested the hypotheses that (i) dead wood of bamboo (monocots) is less decomposable than dead wood of eudicots or magnoliids; (ii) both microbial-and termite-driven decomposition show negative relationships with initial wood density and with dry matter content. 3. Bamboo wood generally decomposed more slowly than dicot wood but only slightly slower at given wood density or diameter. Wood decomposition in both bamboo and dicot clades decreased with wood density or dry matter content. Termites contributed greatly to this pattern, explaining 53.4% of the variance in wood decomposition and preferentially attacking dead wood of lower initial density, which corresponded with thicker outer culm walls in the case of bamboo species. Thus, termites strongly strengthen the relationship between species' wood traits and litter decomposition as driven by microbial activity. 4. Synthesis. These previously unknown relationships among dead wood quality, diameter, termites and decomposing microbes of both woody monocots and dicots will advance our understanding of the driving mechanisms of (sub) tropical wood decomposition and its contribution to the global carbon cycle.

Bamboo applications become popular recently by the community due to the rise of environmental awareness, including for post-disaster building. Two aspects of post-disaster buildings were considered: i.e. its performance and its recyclability. This research explore ability of bamboo as tensile structure, and also as knock-down structure. Bamboo radial compression (barcom) connection was explored by these aspects. Barcom joint is one of the solutions to be effectively used for gaining the tensile strength of bamboo by converting tensile load parallel to fiber into radial compression perpendicular to fiber. Barcom joint was tested to acquire its load capacity and its future improvement. The load test showed that the barcom connection could reach up to 21.61 kN. To improve this capacity, either better wire or special washer design could be proposed. The adaption in previous built structure (i.e. Three Mountain Building in Serangan island, Bali and knock-down bamboo geodesic dome in Colombia) was used as a case-study. In the construction of Three Mountain Building, barcom joint was used to hang the bamboo rafters and acts as tension-like member. Meanwhile, the use of barcom joint in Colombia was intended to connect the bamboo with the steel bowl connector which could be dismantled and reused again many times.
