Building up or spreading out? Typologies of urban growth across 478 cities of 1 million+

Abstract: Urban form in both two-(2D) and three-dimensions (3D) has significant impacts on local and global environments. Here we developed the largest global dataset characterizing 2D and 3D urban growth for 478 cities with populations of one million or larger. Using remote sensing data from the SeaWinds scatterometer for 2001 and 2009, and the Global Human Settlement Layer for 2000 and 2014, we applied a cluster analysis and found five urban growth typologies: stabilized, outward, mature upward, budding outward, upwar… Show more

“…Cities growing more upward than outward is the notable characteristics in East and Southeast Asian cities, while Chinese cities have both upward and outward features [76]. Therefore, the mixture of land uses in Asian cities does not only refer to horizontal land use mix, but also to vertical mixed land use, which relates to multi-purpose use (e.g., residential-commercial mixed use) in a single building ( Figure 7).…”

“…Although there is growing evidence from the scientific literature that urbanization is accompanied by declining land-use efficiency, decreasing urban population densities, and loss of agricultural land [19][20][21], there is little systematic analysis of these trends across different parts of the world, particularly for small to medium-sized cities [22]. One limitation of our current understanding is a lack of knowledge on changing urban land cover in cities of different population sizes and implications of urban land expansion on efficient use of land.…”

“…Guwahati is on the smart city list of cities in India and future strategies will need to address minimizing its outward growth. The outward growth trend of Guwahati, as distinct from upward growth fits into the global trend, as a recent study of 478 million cities discerned (Mahtta et al ., ).…”

“…Indeed, minimizing urban sprawl and exploring avenues to increase densification and contain a city's outward expansion should be the priority of cities (NCE, ). At the same time, different parts of a city may require differentiated strategies (Mahtta et al ., ) and a one size fits all approach may not be advisable for different areas of Guwahati.…”
