Building up an ecologically sustainable and socially desirable post-COVID-19 future

Abstract: COVID-19 crisis has emphasized how poorly prepared humanity is to cope with global disasters. “…The suggestions of mitigation policies and strategies to reduce emissions systematically for a transition into global sustainability in a post-COVID-19 era have been elaborated in recent scientific literature (Duflot et al 2021;Ranjbari et al 2021). It is advocated that green infrastructures and systems can be built within the airport facilities to enhance the energy sustainability of their operations as a significant part of the carbon emission mitigation strategies (Santa et al 2020;Ng et al 2021;Bragge et al 2022).…”

“…Concerning the social-economic-environmental ongoing crisis, questions were raised about inequality's role in environmental deterioration [24]. Some researchers claim that the COVID-19 crisis is a direct cause of the ecological crisis and prevents its resolution [25], considering that inequality leads individuals to adopt consumerist and individualistic behaviors toward the environment [26]. Heerink et al [27] stated that inequality involves the concentration of affluence amongst wealthy groups, more aware or informed, whose activities produce less environmental pressure.…”

“…We are confident that our readers will appreciate this contribution toward (re)thinking the post-COVID-19 period in a desirably more sustainable world, which will always be necessary in a permanently built balance between society, nature, and technology [18]. In this balance, citizenship exercised in a conscious way, scientific interdisciplinarity, the community-scientists-political decision relationship and communication, and collective cooperation (group, national, and transnational) are crucial elements for success in achieving this goal [3,21].…”
