Narrowing the performance deficit between design intent and real-time environmental and energy performance of buildings is a complex and involved task, impacting on all building stakeholders. Buildings are designed, built and operated with the use of increasingly complex technology and throughout their building life-cycle, produce vast quantities of data. However, many commercial buildings do not perform as originally intended.This paper presents a a dual strand approach to the performance gap problem, describing how heterogeneous building data sources can be transformed into semantically enriched information. This data can serve as a data service for a structured performance analysis approach, at the enterprise level. A performance management framework is described which builds on the semantically enriched information. The performance framework is an approach to performance management which describes performance in a series of objectives which can be evaluated against performance data. The demonstrator illustrates how heterogeneous data can be published semantically and then interpreted using a cross life-cycle performance framework approach.

Abstract:The interoperability challenge is a long-standing challenge in the domain of architecture, engineering and construction (AEC). Diverse approaches have already been presented for addressing this challenge. This article will look into the possibility of addressing the interoperability challenge in the building life-cycle with a linked data approach. An outline is given of how linked data technologies tend to be deployed, thereby working towards a "more holistic" perspective on the building, or towards a large-scale web of "linked building data". From this overview, and the associated use case scenarios, we conclude that the interoperability challenge cannot be "solved" using linked data technologies, but that it can be addressed. In other words, information exchange and management can be improved, but a pragmatic usage of technologies is still required in practice. Finally, we give an initial outline of some anticipated use cases in the building life-cycle in which the usage of linked data technologies may generate advantages over existing technologies and methods.

Interconnecting building information on multiple scales and lifecycle stages enables designers to improve their decision-making and tackle ecological, societal, and economical challenges. However, this information is often generated in different software tools, saved in different file formats, using a stakeholder’s own domain language, and is stored in decentral storage locations. This paper presents a tool that integrates data from different stakeholders into a single viewpoint. The tool – LBDviz – combines a browser-based IFC viewer and semantic web technologies to combine geometry with other data that falls outside the scope of the IFC schema. The tool is tested in multiple case studies. These case studies range from requirement checking during the design phase, generating design feedback during the operational phase, and maintaining building performance in a sustainable and economically viable manner. The results of these studies can be reused in future designs, stimulating a more circular design process. The method used in LBDviz enables the interconnection of data within and without the architectural design domain and reduces data interoperability challenges in many lifecycle phases of a construction project.
