Building Partnerships and Stakeholder Relationships for HIV Prevention: Longitudinal Cohort Study Focuses on Community Engagement

Abstract: American women's vulnerability to HIV. Historically, racial minorities and women are underrepresented in research, and study results often do not account for differences by race/ ethnicity. 2,3 Although the NIH mandates that women and minority populations be included in NIH-funded clinical research, 4 substantial barriers to African American women's participation remain. Several well-documented factors are known to affect minority participation in research, including lack of trust, power differences, limited a… Show more

“…Being unable to maintain HIV care during the COVID-19 pandemic was a significant hindrance to achieving the “90–90–90” goal. With the temporary discontinuation of public HIV screening systems, CBOs represented one option to bridging the gap in maintaining HIV care services [ 28 – 31 ]. In addition, HIV self-testing (HIVST) is an innovative approach to providing access to HIV testing safely while maintaining social distancing.…”

“…Community engagement is an effective strategy to improve trust and trustworthiness of research to increase participation and begin to reverse the large gap in scientific knowledge about Black populations (Abadie et al, 2018; Cook et al, 2018; Kwizera et al, 2020). Community engagement research can achieve this goal through the core principles of building trusting relationships, creating beneficial partnerships, improving communication, and helping to mobilize the community to advocate for and participate in solving their health concerns (DeShields et al, 2020). In this way, the community is centered, and research revolves around the desires of the community, potentially having a greater effect on improving health inequities and participating in material and system change (Agurs-Collins et al, 2019; Alvidrez et al, 2019; Berry et al, 2023), which moves research from recording Black women's voices to informing intervention development, delivery, and content preferences through participation (Bond et al, 2021).…”

“…Community advisory councils (CAC) are critical infrastructure and mechanisms for community engagement research (DeShields et al, 2020; Halladay et al, 2017; Quinn, 2004). CACs typically consist of representative community members and stakeholders who communicate the community's needs, advise researchers on the intervention's potential success, and participate in intervention design and development (Weinstein et al, 2023).…”

Currently, TB infection rates are five times higher for Alaskan Indians and American Indians and 13 times higher among Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders than Caucasian Americans.…”
